The Buy Nothing Day
Have you ever heard about the "Buy Nothing Day"? It's a 24-hour moratorium consumer spending and concern about ecology, psychology and political consequences of consumism. It's a date to think if we really buy somethings for a need or only to have that thing. The "Buy Nothing Day" is celebrated on November 25Th and last year we had a lot of outcry and events against consumism to encourage people to not buy. In Canada, students made a bazar where they could exchange some of their own things to a food-ticket that they could redeem later. In England, some people celebrated "Buy Nothing Day" in the heart of the consumption, the shopping area in the center of Bristol. They had a free-shop, a kids' area, a lot of information about the conception of the day, they gave free food and even had a music group with recycled instruments.
Unfortunately the "Buy Nothing Day" wasn't promoted in Brazil, but it's an interesting idea and it makes people think a little. It gets a lot of followers that wrapped up in this project and quickly we'll see the consequences of it.
Let's think a little: Would be possible to not buy anything throughtout a whole day? If you think it's possible, hold on and try to participate by not participating, November 25th is coming! I'll try.
